The gardeners

The Under Gardener
I have been gardening for over 25 years and I am still learning. My apprenticeship has been long and until I can plant seedings or sow seeds in a straight line I shall never make Head Gardener!
Most of my time is spent trying to grow vegetables and create a small ornamental garden on an impossible site on a Scottish island. Good days are when it’s not raining and not blowing more than 30 mph. Impossible climate but stunning sea views!
Gardening is part of my ethos and integral in my simple and slow life style. I’m no good-life romantic (the Land Rover in my first post is a give away!)  but do my best to care for the small part of this lovely island entrusted to my care.
Any conceits I had about garden design and plant selection were blown away with the first gale, so I keep experimenting and put my faith in muck and magic with a good helping of science.

The Head Gardener
Himself* is my gardening oracle, responsible for strategic planning (building things and hard landscaping) and perhaps above all planting the tatties and the onions. As a bonus he also bakes wonderful bread, cooks better than I do, takes brilliant photographs and is an extremely knowledgeable naturalist. These are just some of the reasons why we’ve been married for over 30 years!

Himself – the boss, head of the family or husband – a common term in the islands.

  1. Hello, I am writing a feature on gardens in the Western Isles and would love to speak to you about all the beautiful work you’re doing! Do you have an email address that I could contact you on? Thanks for your help, Olivia Halvorsen
