12 Days of Christmas

Day 4: Lichen Log

Lichen mosaic

This is a very special Yule log, it might be a little on the small size, but it is of great importance. A good supply of logs is an essential part of the croft winter survival kit. Almost every croft house will have a log or peat burning stove, not only does it provide a cosy atmosphere on cold winter nights, it is usually the only source of heat when the power goes off. As soon as the wind speed is predicted to be storm force 9 or more, you know it’s time to make sure the log basket is full, and the candles, matches and torches are to hand.

On an island where trees are scarce, a gift of logs or drift wood is always appreciated. There is, however, a little more to this small gift beyond an offering of wood for my stove. It is covered with the most beautiful mosaic of lichens and was given to me by a friend who knows I am interested in these wonderful complex fungi.

So my offering on the fourth day of Christmas is winter fuel, a beautiful natural history specimen and a reminder that friends and being part of a small, close community are of great value, especially in these troubled times

  1. It really is a beautiful pattern. It would be a shame to burn it in fact. 😉 I hope you can stay warm and safe through the storm.

  2. Thank you Cathy, I think the worst of the storm is over, although it is still very cold.
I do not intend to burn the lichen log, unless things get really desperate.

  3. I love to see lichen, and your lichen log is very beautiful – I am pleased to read you will avoid burning if at all possible…
